Henry Rissik MARSHALL (1891-1959). Coloured Worcester Porcelain of the First Period 1751-1783. Newport, Monmouthshire: Ceramic Book Company, 1954. Quarto (10 ¾ x 8 ½ inches). Pp.[i-x; i-ii], 1-305[306]. 31 colored plates, 55 full-page uncolored illustrations. Original blue cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, early (original?) clear plastic wrapper (cloth spine lightly faded and rubbed). [with:] H. Rissik MARSHALL. A 2pp. letter to ‘Dear Dr. Richardson’, 22 January 1955, small 8vo, noting that ‘I hate handwriting of any kind, even signing my name so much that I only agreed to autograph the first 25 de luxe copies but I happened to have an ordinary copy at hand so I signed it [see verso of title page] and sent it, along with the 25 de luxe copies, to the publishers… and told them to send it on to you…’ + original envelope tipped onto front pastedown. Provenance: Dr. John Kirk Richardson, Richmond, Virginia (bookplate and letter). Probably a unique copy: the edition was limited to 1200 copies, of these 25 were numbered and signed, in addition the present example was also signed by Marshall [see the letter from the author, which suggests that at the time it was signed it was unique].
